Amazon is Sued Over Kindle Deletions

July 31st, 2009

Amazon.com is being sued by a 17 year old after remotely logging back into Kindle devices all over the world to delete the classic book “1984″ which it found to be a pirated copy that had been offered for sale.

This is disturbing to think that Amazon feels the right to reach back into a device to delete something that had been purchased. Automatic refunds were given but that does not compensate this teenager who had written extensive notes about the book for a class assignment.

All of those notes now reference a non-existent book.

This is shameful of Amazon to think they can do this with no prior notice to consumers that they even had the ability to do this, let alone the right.

While this is not exactly “cloud computing”, I am less than enthused about the Kindle for this very reason. When I buy something I want it in my own personal possession, and this is one reason why.

I hope this lawsuit does achieve class action status and I further hope that the courts will prevent Amazon or anyone else from doing something like this in the future.

No Backup – What’s Your Excuse?

July 10th, 2009

The same computer I was trying to clean this week from the virus happened to be loaded with many gigabytes of important family photos.

When I picked up the computer, I was told that those photos were needed off of the computer.

“I don’t suppose you ever got an online backup program setup like I suggested last time?” I asked.

“Ahh, no.”

Folks, online backup is not that expensive. You can get 2GB free here.

I still maintain my statement that appears on another page on this website somewhere, that is that if it’s not backed up, delete it now – that way you regain disk space and no longer have to concern yourself with losing it.

Eventually, the drive will die or something else bad will happen.

Here are three online backup services to choose from. All have either a free trial or money back guarantee.

Mozy Online Backup

Carbonite Online Backup

KeepIt Online Backup

KeepIt is the only one I haven’t used yet, it is kind of a newcomer.

These programs will help you decide what data needs to be backed up and then do it automatically.

Naturally, I recommend you verify often; try going to another PC and restore a file occasionally and check the file contents against what it is supposed to be.

Antivirus Software – Don’t Go On The Net Without It

July 10th, 2009

This week I had the distinctly disagreeable task of trying to clean a PC that was infected with primarily one trojan.

However, it attached itself to about every executable file on the system including the i386 directory copies of the XP CD; about 896 files in total that were uncleanable and therefore had to be moved to quarantine.

As you can imagine, the PC does not work too well for the most part. I will have to completely reinstall Windows. This could be avoided, of course, if the user had a USB drive that had a disk image made with Acronis True Image (Save 35% here) at any point before the infection.

The real problem was that this home user had ignored my stipulation to  get a quality antivirus program (she did not want me to do it at the time I upgraded her hard drive).

So, she’s been tooling about the internet with computer security software whatsoever.

Please, please make sure you are covered and that the antivirus signatures are up to date.

With most of these internet security suites, it is your choice if you want a software firewall or not and if you want a full complement of antispam, etc. (This is usually the difference between buying just an antivirus program and getting a suite, but some have middle ground).

Here is a list of quality antivirus programs/suites to choose from:

Eset is (currently) said to be the best antivirus. Firewall is optional purchase.

AVG has a free version, but the paid software is an upgrade.

Panda internet security is highly acclaimed.

Trend Micro has been a reliable option over the years for many of my clients on their home PC’s.

ZoneAlarm has always been known for their software firewall product that was pretty much the first of its kind. I have used this product in many small office situations.

Encrypt Your Personal Information with Steganos LockNote

July 8th, 2009

I ran across this post at the How-To Geek.

Steganos has been around for a long time and it’s a great way to protect your personal information.

The products they have are secure and yet easy to use. I cannot vouch for the antivirus product, but the data protection and mobile security have been outstanding.

A lot of people with smart phones just don’t realize how at-risk their data is. Windows Mobile especially can be syncing a lot of data to that device that could easily be lost or stolen.

They even have some free software. Check them out today.

Microsoft Announces Yet Another Internet Explorer Vulnerability

July 8th, 2009

I do hope you are not still using Internet Explorer.

I use Firefox, now up to version 3.5, with a lot of cool, free, add-ons. Google Chrome receives a lot of great reviews also.

Watch this short video see what I just “don’t get” about Microsoft’s bugs.

Microsoft, with regards to computer security, reminds me of that 7-Up guy (the one from the Bond movie) saying, about caffeine, that 7-Up “never had it, never will”.

Would You Rather Work From Home?

July 2nd, 2009

Here I describe some changes in my life as I transition to making money online while working from home.

And in it, I ask you a very important question.

Clicking this link could change your life.

How to Make Money Online – Even for Beginners

July 1st, 2009

People are desperate and they are turning to the internet to try to make extra money (or even a living).

In my opinion, 99% of what you will find to help you make money online is either outdated (badly), dubious (at best) or an outright scam.

(I’ve been buying, trying, and reviewing these scams, I mean programs, for almost 3 years now.)

A couple of years ago an online friend recommended I take a look at a free program from a good old boy in Arkansas named Travis who was making money online and his wife commented that it was so easy the way Travis did it that he could take a bum off the street and
teach him how.

While he’s never actually used a bum that I know of, but I do know there is a single mom or two who he taught that now make incomes up to 6 figures.

The point is this: There is no get rich quick scheme for making money online. No magic sauce, no special formula.

But there are techniques that do work if you are willing to do some work.

The methods this guy teaches on his website and through emails, all for free, are such that you had to dig a little to understand the methodology. Not knocking him at all, it’s just that an actual beginner would many times get stuck, frustrated and then quit.

No more.

David Bocock has created a set of videos, supplemented with a pdf that take Travis’ teaching from start to finish. He assumes you know nothing other than how to get online.

He also assumes you have no startup money; in fact one mother of three wrote about
starting out from the local library with their computer and no money. It works.

I’ve followed Travis and his methods for about 2 years now, but watching the videos David put together shed so much light so quickly I was blown away.

Here it is
————-

If you are motivated to make some extra money online, this is the
only program you need. Get it and focus on it.

If you need help you can contact David or post on my support forum.

Caution: It probably won’t work for you if you don’t have some motivation. If you have all the money you need in life, you’ll likely give up because this does require some honest work.

But if you are short on cash, scared about your job, your pension is not enough, your 401(k) is now a 201(k) – or worse, then maybe this is for you.

There is only one other make money online program that I would endorse this highly, and it currently is not available.

If you are interested, click the link here – 4 Day Money Making BluePrint

The people in the testimonials you will see there are real. I know a couple of them, and could even add my own.

The key once you get the program is FOCUS. Do the 4 days of steps, then rinse & repeat. Do go subscribing to other lists and let distractions get you off track. Believe me, I know this one.
