Budget Hard Drive Encryption is Useless
February 16th, 2009You will be seeing more and more about encrypting data on hard disks, and especially laptops.
I am all for it.
Yet here is another situation where you get what you pay for.
Have you seen inexpensive hard drive encryption on external USB drives, for instance? Staray is one brand that offers a neat looking USB enclosure that requires a pin number to access and has encrypted data in one side of the hard drive itself.
Problem is, all you have to do to bypass the pin is to take the drive out of the enclosure and install in a PC or another enclosure.
Which then brings us to the encryption. Cheap encryption is useless against anyone with any resources, and that is the case with the Staray S Series.
